Abstract

Summary: Practical implementation of a closed system (PhaSeal) for the preparation, administration and disposal of cytotoxic drugs in a busy ambulatory cancer centre.

Purpose: An eight week trial was undertaken to illustrate that a busy ambulatory cancer centre could utilize a closed system for cytotoxic drug preparation, administration and disposal without a negative impact on its chemotherapy service.

Conclusions: There was an overwhelming sense of staff safety when utilizing PhaSeal for preparation, administration and disposal of cytotoxics. Its Implementation in a busy ambulatory cancer centre had minimal impact on the activity of the pharmacy and the chemotherapy suite after the first two week of the trial. The system reinforced the importance of the safety precautions that must be used during the handling of cytotoxic drugs.
